How to Love Your Hair -- Day 4: Preserve Your Color

Imagine the upkeep on this if it wasn't a wig...
Hey everyone! Today is Day 4 of my How to Love Your Hair series and I'll be talking about how to protect and preserve your hair color. There's nothing more frustrating than having your color fade right after paying to have your hair done, amIright ladies??

Here are some tips to keep your color looking fresh between salon visits:

  • Use products that are designed to keep your color vibrant. Look for product lines that fight the four causes of fading: Environmental aggressors, poor cuticle condition, color altering minerals and chlorinated water.
  • Cut back on shampooing your hair as much as possible. If you can go every other day (or even every three days!), you'll not only protect your hair color but also make your hair less dry and increase its natural shine.
  • Try a gloss or glaze. You can stop by your salon for a quick glaze touch up which will enhance the overall tonal qualities of your color and increase softness, manageability, and shine.. or you could try any of the several at-home varieties! 10 minutes in your shower is all you'll need to get amped-up color.
  • Use shampoos without sulfates. They can cause color to fade faster.

SOME PRODUCTS TO TRY...
Redken Color Extend products are a good starting point. The shampoo provides maximum color security and the conditioner shields, stabilizes, and secures color intensity to leave hair smooth, manageable, and radiant.

Batiste Dry Shampoos have tinted formulas to help disguise root regrowth and they'll also help extend the time between shampoos.

John Freida Color Glazes come in brunette, red, and clear to help give color a boost at home for less than $10.

Pureology Essential Repair Instant Repair protects against breakage and helps rebuild color treated hair.

Matrix Total Results So Silver Shampoo is GREAT for blondes. The deep purple color of the shampoo will help tone lighter hair and prevent it from turning brassy. Use it 1-2x a week at most, though.

  1. I usually use John Frieda for color treated hair but I might try something new this time.
