MABB Bi-Weekly Beauty Question -- Week 22

Photobucket

Every other Wednesday, the Metro Atlanta Beauty Bloggers will answer a beauty-related question just for fun! This week's question is...

What are your beauty "bad habits"?

:sigh: Let's be honest.. What aren't my beauty bad habits?! Among the worst offenders would definitely have to be not washing my makeup off faithfully EVERY night, and not wearing SPF on a daily basis. Oh, and not moisturizing my hands and cuticles enough.. it's especially apparent to me when I want to take pictures of my manicure and my cuticles look like miniature disasters in a close-up photo! :(

Other than that, I think I really just need to be better about keeping up with my "maintenance and pampering" stuff: waxing my brows, doing facials, etc. I'm fortunate to have pretty good skin on my own, so I don't really think too much about it until I have a problem.

REVIEW -- Olay Fresh Effects Shine Minimizer Cleanser and Satin Finish Lotion

Hey everyone! Today I have a review of Olay's new Fresh Effects products to share with you! I'll be focusing on the Shine Minimizing Cleanser and the Satin Finish Lotion!

Honestly, I'd never really paid much attention to Olay until they picked up Carrie Underwood as their spokeswoman a couple years back. I guess I'd just always assumed the brand was geared more towards my mom's generation..? But Carrie Underwood is about my age, and I adore her! Yes, I have no shame in falling for a great marketing campaign, haha. :)

As you know, I struggle with oily skin so these products are right up my alley and I was very excited to give them a try. Plus, I love the concept of getting everything (my skin included) "fresh" for Spring! Brightly colored clothes, bright flowers, and radiant skin! What could be better?!

Read on to find out how these products fared for me!

The Olay Fresh Effects skin care line is built to fit seamlessly into your everyday routine, because.. let's face it: We're all busy these days! Why waste your precious time worrying about your skin?! The products work together to deep clean, hydrate, and refresh your skin so that you can always look your absolute best, even if you're just out running errands or spending an afternoon in the gym.

{SHINE, SHINE GO AWAY!} SHINE MINIMIZING CLEANSER

The {SHINE, SHINE GO AWAY!} Shine Minimizing Cleanser is one product that does serious double duty! It deep cleans your pores like a mask, but lathers and rinses clean just like a daily cleanser. The result? No waiting around for a mask to dry, and your skin gets an amazing deep clean! This cleanser is kaolin clay based to really get deep into your pores and remove 2X the dirt, oil, and make-up that a regular cleanser does! Plus, another benefit of the kaolin clay is that it also helps control oil.

This cleanser retails around $7 and is available at most drugstores and supermarkets, as well as online.

{LONG LIVE MOISTURE!} SATIN FINISH LOTION

The {LONG LIVE MOISTURE!} Satin Finish Lotion is pretty much the best of both worlds as well. It's got all the benefits of a lotion, but with the lightweight feel of a gel! This gives you a quick and refreshing way to get the 24-hour moisture that your skin needs without slathering it with thick and heavy lotions or creams. It's also oil-free and non-comedogenic, so it won't block your freshly deep-cleaned pores!

This moisturizer retails for around $13 and is also available at most drugstores and supermarkets, as well as online.
Let's be real: I'm an extremely busy girl in my mid (late?!) 20's. I'm not quite in that "acne-prone" skin phase anymore, even though I do have occasional breakouts.. and while I do use some anti-aging products, that's not really my main concern either.

All I want is a good skin care regimen that's quick and easy to use and will give me great results. I think the Olay Fresh Effects line does a great job of fulfilling that need.

The cleanser really gets in and deep cleans my skin. You can even see it removing makeup in the lather that it creates! I mean, how awesome is that?! I love that it contains kaolin clay because lately I've just been too lazy to keep up with doing a full facial routine (masks, etc) like I should. I love knowing that this cleanser is essentially combining both of those steps into one.

And, as an "oily" girl, it took me years to finally come to the realization that I still need to apply a moisturizer to my skin. Even though I know this now, I get hesitant (or lazy) when it comes time to actually do this step every day. Plus, so many moisturizers manage to turn my face into an oil slick by mid-day anyways.. and that's not cute. Especially when you sell makeup and skincare for a living. If we're busy, I might not have time to stop and blot my face at work.. and then I'm sitting there swearing by a product that's supposed to control oil while my face is so shiny it reflects light like a disco ball. Blech.

The satin finish lotion does a great job of keeping my skin hydrated (important for anti-aging!) and shine free, but without being so drastically matte like a mattifying moisturizer does. Like my skin but better, I guess? It's completely light-weight, non-greasy, and absorbs so quickly. One pump is enough for my entire face and neck, and once I rub it in.. it's done. I don't have to worry about being shiny later, I don't have to feel guilty for not moisturizing.. it's awesome!
Overall, I've REALLY enjoyed using both of the Olay Fresh Effects products so far, and I feel like my skin has improved as well! Since the cleanser has been deep-cleaning my pores, I've noticed less overall breakouts, and the moisturizer has made my skin feel much softer and appear more hydrated than when I was "forgetting" (or neglecting) to use one.

The products smell great, and I think they are a fantastic overhaul of my skincare routine. They're quick and practically effortless to use and keep up with. Both of them will definitely be making it into my hospital bag for baby Carey's delivery in a few weeks! I'm sure that I probably won't feel like doing much in the way of my beauty routine after giving birth, but I know I can manage keeping up with these two super easy steps!

These are definitely two products that I can see myself purchasing in the future, and I love that they are both affordable and widely available. I'm thrilled to give them both a perfect rating of 5 stars!

RATING: 5 out of 5 STARS

MABB Bi-Weekly Beauty Question -- Week 21

Photobucket

Every other Wednesday, the Metro Atlanta Beauty Bloggers will answer a beauty-related question just for fun! This week's question is...

Product testing aside, on a daily basis do you stick to your "tried & true" favorites or do you like to experiment with different products?

When I'm not product testing, I generally stick to my tried and true favorites. Every once in a while, I might throw a new product in if I find that something in my current routine is no longer working as well for me as it used to, or if something new just completely catches my eye..

But overall, I feel like I'm already constantly switching up PR products (especially with hair and skin care) that it's nice to have some consistency to my beauty routine!

Plus, I feel like when you're super familiar with a product, it streamlines your "getting ready" process: you know exactly how much to use and how to apply it.. and that means I might have more time to sleep in the mornings! Haha! :)

REVIEW -- Murad's Acne Clarifying Mask

Hey everyone! Today I have a review of Murad's Clarifying Mask for acne. I received my full-size sample from Beauty Stop Online in exchange for my honest review. If you've followed MandysSecrets for a while, you know that I have previously reviewed (and love!) the Murad Acne/Acne & Anti-Aging line, and it is always what I go back to as my "tried and true" skin care regimen when I'm not testing out new products for the blog! However, the Clarifying Mask was a product that I had yet to try.

Keep reading to see my thoughts on how it performed!

Beauty Stop Online carries a WIDE selection of health and beauty products, ranging from skin care to hair and nail products, a selection of organic offerings, men's items, and fragrance (among others!). My shipping was very fast, and my Murad Clarifying Mask came securely packaged.. which is not always the case when you receive PR samples/items. I was very pleased with my experience, and would definitely feel comfortable ordering from them in the future!

The Murad Acne Clarifying Mask comes in a 2.65 fl oz tube, and retails for $38.99. Beauty Stop Online sells it for $36.99, so you're already saving $2 with no promo codes or hassles!

It is a thick, white, deep penetrating, opaque mask that absorbs acne-causing impurities from your skin. You use it after cleansing your face, and I like to leave my face just a smidge damp so that the mask glides on that much easier, but it does apply relatively smoothly on its own. It takes about 10-15 minutes for it to dry, and then you rinse it off, leaving behind clearer, more refreshed skin.

The mask is best used for oily and/or blemish prone skin, as it also helps regulate the skin's production of oil. It contains the rare earth clays kaolin and bentonite, sulfur to reduce the severity of acne, and zinc oxide and licorice root to soothe and calm the skin.

It is free of peroxide, parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, and GMOs.. and it is made in the USA.

I was so excited to try my mask that I used it the very first night I received it! I used it after washing my face with Murad's Acne Clarifying Cleanser (which I purchased myself, since it is the line that I use regularly). I let my Clarifying Mask dry while I soaked in a bubble bath before bed, so it did take a bit longer than the average 10-15 minutes, since I was sitting in a hot and humid room.

Once it dried, I had no problems rinsing it off with a warm, wet washcloth, and I was left with refreshed looking skin. The next morning, my face seemed less oily, but I did have several new small active breakouts. I attributed this to the mask actually doing its job of pulling impurities out of my skin.

I've continued to use my mask at least twice a week for a month (sometimes 3 times per week if I'm feeling really motivated), and I can say that I have seen an overall decrease in the oiliness of my skin, even though I live in Georgia and our weather is starting to be steadily warm again.

Also, the more I've used the mask, the less new active breakouts I have after each use. Yes, I'll admit, the first week or so was a little rough. The mask did a great job of penetrating my skin to remove impurities, and I know that the only way to get them out is.. through blemishes. I expected it, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me. And mine seriously weren't that bad. No one but me knew they were there, so please don't think that I was walking around with third eyes on my head.. It was nothing like that. I promise!

But once those impurities were removed and I kept using the mask to keep my skin clear, I've had a decrease in the number of new severe active breakouts, which is always a huge plus! Even with my crazy pregnancy hormones!

Overall, I really like the Murad Acne Clarifying Mask. It's easy to use, and gives great results due to the high sulfur content in it (4.0%), which makes it great for teens or anyone who is trying to clear up cystic acne quickly. It's non-drying and non-irritating, and safe to use multiple times per week.

My only complaint is the sulfur smell, and I know it's simply because I'm pregnant. I've used other sulfur-based products from the Murad Acne line and not had a problem with them, but the high content of this one combined with my super-sniffer pregnancy nose makes it a bit hard for me to use at times. Still, if my only complaint is that I have to smell sulfur for a few minutes a week to end up with great skin, I'll gladly count that as a fair trade off!

I'm pleased to give the Murad Clarifying Cleanser 4.0 out of 5 stars!

RATING 4.0 out of 5 STARS

MABB Bi-Weekly Beauty Question -- Week 20

Photobucket

Every other Wednesday, the Metro Atlanta Beauty Bloggers will answer a beauty-related question just for fun! This week's question is...

Can you create a FOTD for $20 or less? Show us what products you would use!

NOTE: For this, we are not figuring sales tax, brushes, tools, or implements, just the regular cost of the actual make-up products.

For me, I like to do a FULL face of makeup every day. We're talking primer, the whole nine yards. I wanted to see how successful I could be at still managing to create a full face of makeup within the $20 limit.. which was a little daunting considering that just my daily primer, face powder, and concealer total over $100 alone! Talk about a horrible realization!

Even though I love my expensive makeup, I'm still a frugal girl at heart! I love mixing drugstore and high end products.. and If you've been a follower of MandysSecrets for a while, you know that Wet N Wild, ELF, and Essence are all brands that I already love and use.. so most of these items I already had. I did have to go out and buy the ELF Tinted Moisturizer and Cover Stick, and the Essence I LOVE ROCK eye pencil.

For simplicity's sake, I decided to go with a nice, neutral and fresh Spring FOTD. Of course, this look could be altered towards a nighttime or more colorful look, just by switching up the lip product and/or WnW shadow trio that you select!

So.. here's my completed look:

What do you think?! I know my eyebrows are the complete wrong color (I used the crease shade from the WnW trio), and I didn't manage to sneak a primer into this mix... but I think I did a pretty good job of still managing to recreate my daily face on a $20 budget! Of course, I'm not out to give up some of my more expensive products.. there's a reason I buy them: they simply just work better for my skin, and they provide better coverage.. but I do think it's awesome that there are so many decent and affordable makeup options available!

Oh.. and for the record, because I know some of you have already whipped out your calculators and added up the prices from above...

MY FOTD GRAND TOTAL IS... $19.95!

5 cents to spare! Take that, $20 FOTD Challenge! :D

MABB Bi-Weekly Beauty Question -- Week 19

Photobucket

Every other Wednesday, the Metro Atlanta Beauty Bloggers will answer a beauty-related question just for fun! This week's question is...

Knowing what you know now, what beauty advice would you give your teenage self?

NO TANNING BEDS! Ugh. That has to be my number one beauty regret. And to moisturize. Other than that, I would just tell my teenage self mainly HOW to apply makeup. That was something I struggled with for several years. I'd actually like to refer you back to my answer to our Week 3 Beauty Question for an overview of how I looked on any given day during high school... No seriously, go read. I was a straight up hot ass mess. I can admit it, and I have almost no pictures that could be used as blackmail proof. :D

Thankfully, by the time my husband and I started dating, I was starting to figure out that less is more:

Circa 2006, I was 20.

...And my makeup application skills were improving steadily:

Still 2006. Why do guys love taking pictures of us while we sleep? At least my makeup is on point...
But overall, I was terrified of color for a very long time, and I think that's really sad. Color is awesome! So I guess that would be the last bit of wisdom that I would impart to my younger/teenage self. Plus taking time to practice, because practice makes perfect. It wasn't until I was interested/dedicated enough to sit in front of a mirror and just play with my makeup that I started to gain a broader skill set, and also more courage when it came to color!

REVIEW -- Fusion of Color Loose Mineral Shadows and Blushes! (PIC HEAVY)

Clockwise from top: Mossified, Emerald City, Ink Blue, Honeysuckle, Oh Me Oh My, Evening Sky, and Midori

Hey everyone! About a month ago, Kathy from Fusion of Color was kind enough to contact me and offer me 6 samples of my choice from her line to try! I'd been interested in experimenting with loose mineral makeup, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity!

I spent almost an hour browsing the Fusion of Color website.. seriously, there are TONS of colors to choose from. It's almost overwhelming, but in a good way! Anyways, I finally selected the colors that you see above: 4 loose mineral shadows, and 2 loose mineral blushes. I thought that I would be able to create 2 complete FOTD's using these colors. As a surprise bonus, Kathy was also sweet enough to surprise me by slipping in her 2013 color of the year, Mossified! :)
Fusion of Color cosmetics are derived directly from minerals taken straight from the earth, and their main ingredients are inorganic.. which means that there's nothing in them which can grow bacteria. I love that! The products adhere directly to the natural oils in our skin, and do not seep into pores.

Fusion of Color products are all custom made and never repackaged. They are manufactured in small batches to ensure quality control and freshness, and free of oil, talc, dyes, and parabens. They are also celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, so a huge congratulations to them!

In addition to shadows and blushes, Fusion of Color also carries a complete line of face products (concealers, highlighters, foundations, primers, etc), AND a plethora of lip products!

The shadows come with .50 grams of product in a 3 gram jar for $4.75 each. Blushes come with 1 gram of product in a 5 gram jar for $7.25 each. You are able to choose whether or not you would like a sifter in the jars or not.

And you can also choose to sample products (up to 8 at a time, I think?) for $1.65 each. The amounts range from 1/8 teaspoon to 1/16 teaspoon in a 3 gram jar. For reference, both blushes and shadows both come with 1/16 teaspoon per sample.
First, I would love to point out two things to you:

1. Each sample I received came individually sealed. I cannot TELL you how much this made my germophobe heart sing with joy, and also meant that all of my samples arrived perfectly intact! PS -- They also came in an adorable purple little drawstring bag which is now corralling all of my mini perfume samples!

2. Each sample comes clearly labeled with the name and list of ingredients on the back. So there's no guessing as to what it is or what's in it, and if you are allergic to specific things, you can even email Fusion of Color with questions and they'll tell you if the product in question contains what you're allergic to before you order it!

Here's a picture of the complete packaging, minus the safety seal:

I love that the tops of the samples are clear, making it very easy to see what color you're reaching for while doing your makeup.

And here are swatches of the colors, taken in natural (overcast) light, with no flash and no primer:

From L-R: Honeysuckle, Oh Me Oh My, Ink Blue, Evening Sky, Emerald City, Midori, Mossified
Honeysuckle is a bright fuchsia blush with minimal shimmer.

Oh Me Oh My is a peachy-coral blush with a moderate to strong amount of shimmer.

Ink Blue is a deep, matte, navy blue shadow.

Evening Sky is a bright sky blue shadow with moderate shimmer.

Emerald City is a deep emerald green with a moderate to strong amount of shimmer.

Midori is a bright jade green shadow with a moderate to strong amount of shimmer.

Mossified is a subdued, matte, moss green shadow.

I'm actually embarrassed to admit that prior to using these products, I had never worked with loose shadows or blushes before! (I know, I know.. shame on me!) So I was a little unsure as to how to prevent fallout during application, especially since I do my face first and eyes last.

I quickly learned that it's really a trial and error process. I used a flat shadow brush and tapped as much excess product off as I could, and even used what had accumulated in the lids for final touchups just to use as little product as possible. Naturally, I did still experience some product fallout (FYI, Midori was the worst culprit!) BUT it was very easy to clean up with a Q-tip and a bit of extra concealer and loose face powder, as you'll see in the closeup eye shots below.

Also for the record, I only had fallout with the shadows. I don't know if it's because the blush was getting applied to a much bigger area and at a much less dense concentration, or simply that any fallout fell off of my face and I didn't notice it.
Other than slight fallout, the shadows applied and blended BEAUTIFULLY. I used them over Urban Decay's Original Primer Potion and all 4 shadows practically applied themselves. They held up well through my work days, and I didn't find the need to touch them up, even after 8-10 hours of wear... which is more than I can say of some much more expensive name brand shadows! Plus, they were VERY easy to remove at the end of the night and had no residual staining (always a plus!).

So now let's take a look at two FOTD's featuring the Fusion of Color products! I did the exact same makeup look both times, each using 2 shadows and one blush from the line. Almost all other products used in each look are the same, except for lip colors. I will include a detailed list of products used below each look.

I love that Fusion of Color offers a complete line of products ranging from primers to lip products, and that you are able to get samples of just about every product. Plus, the fact that they are custom blended and mineral based is a huge plus.

Also, don't forget how much I love that everything comes sealed! The products were shipped to me very quickly, and also packaged well. Due to the outstanding overall experience that I've had so far, I'm absolutely thrilled to give Fusion of Color a PERFECT rating of 5 out of 5 stars!
